The BetonKanoRace (BKR) or ConcreteCanoeRace (CCR) is an annual event in The Netherlands where building and civil engineering students from different educational institutions compete internationally. This unique event saw its first occurance in The Netherlands in 1977 and consists of multiple races using self-crafted canoes made of concrete. Students apply what they have learned during their study program and show that concrete is more versatile than regular applications in foundations, floors, and beams. The canoes must comply with the rules set, which will be published online well before the event. Though it might seem impossible at first, concrete canoes can float if they are just the right mix of light, strong, and stable. It’s an event where education, innovation, social relations, and sports unite. Quoting: “Combining sheer power with ingenious ideas”.
Races will be held at different distances: 50, 100, and 200 meters for men, women, and mixed groups, which means there are 9 prizes up for grabs for the fastest teams. Additionally, special awards will be handed out to teams for, for example, the most innovative canoe or the lightest canoe.
The ConcreteCanoeRace 2025 will be held in Eindhoven. The organization is under the ConcreteCanoeRace Organization committee of KOers, the Study Association for Structural Engineering & Design at Eindhoven University of Technology.
